As your site attracts more visitors, your Web server may start to slow down because it’s processing more requests for pages and files. At this point, you have two ways to deal with the problem: Streamline your pages or upgrade your hosting.
If you’re buying a shared hosting package from a hosting company, it’s generally easy to upgrade your storage and bandwidth allotment for a higher monthly fee.
If you own or lease a dedicated server, upgrading can be a bit trickier. You can physically upgrade the server, adding new components to make it perform better. Add more memory (RAM) so that its software runs more smoothly, additional processor chips to speed up its operations, or a bigger hard drive to store more files. Make sure you buy components from reliable manufacturers to avoid hardware problems that could affect your site’s performance.
A cheaper but less effective fix is to make sure the files on your site are efficient. An HTML page stuffed with unnecessary tags and formatting will take up more storage space and eat up more bandwidth. Keeping the code on your site clean and streamlined will ensure that the server doesn’t have to work as hard to keep up with your visitors’ requests.
